First one foot steps out; then the other. The dirt path blurs into a slightly different image with each step. Sunlight snakes its way through the overhanging branches and comes to rest, glistening on my ebony hair.
My pace is slow and unrushed as I steadily make my way towards the school over the horizon. Honestly, I'm nervous about going to this new school. I know this educational structure will offer no comfort with familiar faces since I have no friends attending. Hope is all the stable ground I can cling to as I approach the towering main doors.
Briefly, I wonder if this school is meant for giants to attend with the doors being so massive. Shaking my head, I shoo away the foolish idea. Giants did not exist and I am not going to unnerve myself thinking they did.
Now I realize the real problem: how am I going to open these heavy doors? Being too young to hit puberty, I had yet to develop any real strength in my limbs. Sighing, I know I have to at least try.
Placing my palms flat on the door's forest-green surface, I begin pushing against it, willing it to move. Despite my well-deserving efforts, the door didn't even budge a centimeter.
Soon, I start to worry the bell will ring in the next moment or two and I'll be late for my first day of school. Preferring to be punctual, I push against the door with renewed efforts and a sigh of relief escapes me, when the door swings wide. Unfortunately, I was leaning forward, when the door finally moves, so I lose my balance and fall onto the floor.
"I thought I heard someone at the door. May I ask your name young boy?"
Quickly, I scramble to my feet, embarrassment washing over me from my ungraceful landing. Looking up, I meet the gaze of an older woman with chocolate-brown eyes staring into my darker ones.
"My name is Kiku Honda," I answer simply.
"Well, Honda-kun, you better hurry and find your class or you'll be late," she warns as she adjusts her black-rimmed glasses.
As she turns to leave, I call out to her to stop her.
"Wait! Um….courd you prease herp me find my crassroom?" I ask quietly, feeling a little shy.
"Of course! May I see your school papers, please?" she asks, a warm smile brightening her face.
It turns out the woman's name is Soiya-san and she is to be my teacher for this school year. A wave of relief crashes into me as I gratefully follow Soiya-san to her classroom. As we near the dark-oak door, sounds of laughter and cries of merriment can be heard from the other side.
Strutting into the chaos of the classroom, Soiya-san has a welcoming smile upon her face, but walks with all the commanding authority of a teacher.
I linger at the doorway, suddenly too nervous to go in. Not really being the best socializer, I try rehearsing what I'm going to say to my new classmates. Eventually, I decide I'll just be polite and respectful while saying as little as possible. That way, I will not have a chance to say anything offensive or awkward.
"Students, please welcome the final member of our lovely family," announces Soiya-san, gesturing towards my tiny form in the doorway.
Noticing my hesitation, she waves me in encouragingly.
The moment I step into the classroom, I'm surrounded by a mob of other students.
"Hiya, Shorty! My name is Alfred and if you ever need a hero, just call me!" blurts out a blonde loudly, a small cowlick bobbing on top of his head.
A blonde resembling Alfred-kun to the point of making me believe they were twins, stands beside his brother. He opens his mouth shyly to say something, when a trio of boys shoves him out of the way.
"My name ist ze avesome Gilbert and I give you permission to bask in my avesomeness." Wine-red eyes startle me as I find myself in the presence of an albino with ivory skin and silver-white hair.
"And I'm Antonio! I love tomatoes…." Noticing smooth, red orbs in his arms, I decide those must be the tomatoes he speaks of.
"Und zis is…..hey! Vhere did Francis go?!" Gilbert and Antonio scan the room until they spot their target: a wavy-haired blonde with deep blue eyes.
The boy was sitting a few meters away, chatting with some of the girls in class. He flashes them a grin and the girls giggle.
"Zat girl-snatcher…He's stealing my fan-girls!" With an annoyed growl, Gilbert snakes his way through the crowd and roughly pokes the back of Francis' head. "Vat do you zink you're doing French boy? Zese are my girls!"
"I don't see your name on them…" points out Francis innocently.
"Oh yeah?" Grabs a couple of the girls' hands and shows them to Francis. With a black marker in hand, he quickly scribbles his name on their hands. "See?"
"Hey! You just wrote that!" protests Francis.
Getting my first taste of the class I was being flung into, I have to admit it was kind of tart. Sensing this was going to be a long year, I squirm a little in my spot. I just want to get to my desk and sit down, but it felt like a hundred pairs of eyes are set on me.
"Settle down class. It's time for everyone to take your seats. You can welcome Honda-kun properly at lunch."
Being almost giddy with relief, I gratefully make my way to my seat and sit down. Along the way, I pass the obnoxious blonde, an unusually-tall boy with amethyst eyes, and a pretty (h/c) girl-who just happens to sit in the seat in front of mine.
Soiya-san wastes no time and runs through classroom rules and expectations. I take careful note of them as to not earn any disrespect for my teacher.
As I lean to one side to get a better view of the board, I notice the girl in front of me is drawing pictures in her notebook. Upon more careful examination, I realize she's drawing anime chibi's and rather cute ones too.
When she catches me looking, she turns to smile at me over her shoulder.
Embarrassed for rudely staring, I look away shyly.
As the clock ticks away the seconds, class proves to be more interesting than I had expected.
While the teacher's back is turned, Gilbert decides to load sunflower seeds into a straw and shoot them at unsuspecting classmates. One of his projectiles hits a small boy with caramel-brown hair and a curl, earning a startled yelp from the boy and causing him to fall out of his seat.
Pausing to glance over her shoulder, Soiya-san is unable to detect the source of the disturbance. After several moments of surveying her classroom, she returns to writing numbers on the board.
Resuming his merciless pelting of his classmates with sunflower seeds, he finally makes the mistake of aiming at the tall boy a few seats ahead of me.
Once the boy realizes what hit him, he turns to glare at Gilbert as a murky-violet aura emanates from his young form.
I'm not even the target of his wrath, but I feel chills race up and down my spine. Even the girl in front of me is shaking, her (h/c) locks dancing on her shoulders.
Casting a glance at the albino, I find him with an expression that reads: 'what-the-fudge?!' With an unsteady hand, Gilbert sets down his straw and turns away from the boy's penetrating gaze.
When the bell rings to signal it's lunchtime, I jump a little. I prepare to stand up and make my way to the lunchroom alone, so I grab my bag. Not wanting to admit it out loud, I silently confess to myself I'm lonely without any friends to talk to.
Taking a step, I accidentally bump into someone.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to-" I cut short, recognizing the familiar face of the girl who sits in front of me.
"It's okay, Honda-kun. My name's ______-chan by the way," reassures the girl as her (e/c) eyes stare into my dark-brown ones.
"Um, I'm preased to me you, ______-chan," I reply, giving her a polite dip of my head.
Unsure how to respond, she nods cheerfully.
"Hey, Honda-kun? Want to eat lunch together?" Caught off guard by her offer, I shyly accept and she grabs my hand in her hers.
Pulling me along, we walk together down to the cafeteria hand-in-hand. I can feel my cheeks heat up as I accept the fact I'm holding hands with a girl.
We find a spot to sit at an empty table, but the moment we sit down; a few other children float over.
Alfred-kun sits across from me and starts trying to show me his favorite comic book. There's a man with some sort of red table-cloth tied around his neck on the cover.
"You see? I want to be just like him someday!" Alfred-kun eagerly points at the man on the cover, "I want to be a real superhero!"
Staring at the energetic blonde before me, I'm uncertain of how to respond.
"So, Honda-kun. How do you like school so far?" asks ______-chan, as she stares at me expectantly.
"Um….it's interesting…" I answer, remembering the antics of earlier.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Gilbert lurking behind some children at another table, holding a…..riding crop? In quick succession, he sneaks behind each of the boys sitting at the table and a sharp slapping nose can be heard. One by one, the boys jump up with a yelp and one even starts crying afterwards. That same boy with the curl, in fact, is the one now in tears.
"That Gilbert-kun….he's always playing tricks on people!" points out _____-chan, as she shakes her head disapprovingly at the albino.
"Yeah, someone should teach him a lesson," adds a girl sporting long, dusty-brown locks as she joins our table.
"I don't think that is necessary," I point out, when she pulls out a small frying pan from her bag.
"Then what should we do?" asks the girl, her sparkling green eyes trained on me.
Before I can answer, _____-chan steps in. As she calms the girl into lowering the frying pan, I quietly admire her will to keep the peace. Preferably, I rather not fight with anything other than words and _____-chan seems to see it that way too.
"Don't you have a lunch, Honda-kun?" Snapping out of my thoughts, I realize _____-chan is staring at me.
"Um, hai." I pull out my boxed lunch to prove it to her and she stares hungrily at it after I unwrap the cloth covering it.
"I hate to ask this….but would you mind sharing? I forgot to bring a lunch today…" she admits, feeling a bit awkward, and that's when I notice she brought no signs of a lunch.
Unable to ignore someone in need, I shift my lunch closer to her.
"Really? You don't mind?" she asks, surprised.
"No, it's okay. I have more than enough," I answer before she rewards me with a hug for my generosity.
"Just for that, I'm making you my new friend!" giggles ______-chan as she gives me a squeeze before releasing me.
My cheeks are dusted a soft pink as we share my lunch of rice balls, some vegetable soup, and small cuts of grilled fish.
     "I have a friend….suddenly, I don't feel so lonely anymore."

The bond between ______-chan and I only grew stronger as time passes. We help each other avoid Gilbert-kun's devious deeds and comfort each other when we fall and need help getting back up. And even when I collect a few friends along the way, I still remember how _____-chan is my first. By the end of the year, Ludwig-kun, Felicano-kun, Alfred-kun, and ______-chan are all close friends of mine.

As the clock ticks away the final minutes of school, I can't believe how fast the time flew by.
"So what are you guys doing this summer?" asks Francis-kun to his best friends, Antonio-kun and Gilbert-kun.
"I'm planting a bunch of tomato plants!" answers Antonio-kun proudly, his green eyes glowing with excitement.
Gilbert-kun grumbles something about summer school before a giant sunflower seed smacks into him and launches him out of his seat.
Ivan-kun, the tallest boy in class, calmly walks over to stare down at the twitching albino on the ground.
"That is a Russian sunflower seed that I brought from home," explains Ivan-kun, smiling victoriously down at Gilbert-kun.
All I can do is stare in shock, before ______-chan snaps me out of my stupor.
"Got any exciting summer plans, Kiku-kun?" she inquires, her head tilted innocently to one side.
        "Not rearry," I admit.
A saddened look crosses her gaze and she hides her face in her (h/c) hair.
"What's wrong, ______-chan?" I ask, concerned.
"I'm moving this summer, Kiku-kun," she blurts out.
Even with the sun casting its warm light into the room, it feels like the air got a few degrees cooler.
"Y-you are? But why?" I ask, feeling like she was already drifting away.
"My daddy got a new job in a different city, so we have to move there so I can still see him every day," explains ______-chan before she sniffles.
"_______-chan….don't cry." It tore at my heart to see my best friend on the verge of tears.
"But we'll never see each other again!" protests _____-chan as her (e/c) eyes become shiny with unshed tears.
"But that's not true. We wirr find each other again," I reassure her, although it feels more like a promise.
"How can you be sure?" she questions with another sniffle as she tries to fight off crying.
"I….just have a feering," I confess, sensing my words would one day ring true.
"Then let's make a promise: we must never forget each other, okay?" ______-chan wipes at a tear that manages to escapes and flashes me a smile.
"Okay, I promise to never forget you, _____-chan," I vow, unable to stop myself from mirroring her smile.
"And I promise to never forget you either, Kiku-kun."

As the setting sun paints streaks of orange and red across the sky, I wave to _____-chan as she follows her parents to their car. She waves back every step of the way and even from the car's back window as it drives away into the sunset.
"I promise to never forget you…._____-chan...you're just too hard to forget."
